Economic damage to agriculture and forestry by pest animals is a major social problem. In Japan, the magnitude of pest animal damage is 15.8 billion yen according to the statistics of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan in 2018, and more than half of 54% has been reported as deer damage.
Local governments are working to promote capture and utilization of pest animals under the Wildlife Damage Prevention Special Measures Law. An increasing number of local governments are working to revitalize not only capture but also the use of wild animals, such as the promotion of game meat and drawing up the domestic gibier certification system.

Due to the increase in the number of wild deer, feeding damage on crops and plants, such as alpine plants, cedars and cypresses, has been a serious problem. Japanese local governments in various regions are capturing deer in order to control wildlife nuisance.
It is important to accurately discriminate the deer’s sex and capture female deer efficiently to maintain long-term stable populations of deer, reduce damage to agriculture and forestry, prevent ecosystem degradation and preserve biodiversity.
The existing PCR sexing method requires complicated sample preparation and expensive equipment, and is time-consuming. By using our Sika deer sexing kit, you can easily and quickly distinguish the deer sex.
For example, in Shizuoka Prefecture, a high reword fee for capturing female deer was set up to preferentially eliminate female deer by the local government. Our kit was used to confirm the sexes required for calculating the capture bounty, since it can easily and reliably determine the sex from the coat hair from a submitted part of the captured deer (the only lower jaw of the individual).

The damage of sika deer is eroding not only agriculture and forestry, but also serow habitat. It is important to know the distribution area and the density of the population in order to protect serows and take measures to eliminate sika deer. There are survey methods that use sika deer droppings and food marks as traces. However, it is difficult to distinguish sika deer and serow droppings and food marks visually, so it is not possible to grasp the sika deer’s habitat using the traces in areas where there are many serows.
